Fortune Cookie Wisdom

Most recent cookie fortune: Only you can decide what is important to you.

Reading these things often makes me laugh. There is generally not much to them, many are quite stupid and a lot are not even really fortunes.

This one for example, on face value is quite straight forward and at first provoked the mental equivalent of the "Well, Duh!" exclamation.

But this is the second time in the last couple of days that I've come across this concept. I saw a post in a forum I read asking people what they felt was important to them.

The whole thing, to me, comes down to long term priorities and short term interests. So in that vein...

Long Term Important Things

Family: I want them to be and stay happy, healthy, and comfortable.
Friends: I hope to make new friends, and stay close to the ones I have.
Love: I am still looking for it, and hope eventually to find it.
Balance: I hope oneday to discover that my life is balanced. This concept could be a whole other blog, and I should discuss it more later.

Short Term Important Things

Work: I think I am good at what I do and I enjoy doing it. I want to learn how to do it better.
Diversions: Somebody told me once that you can tell what is important to a person by looking at their calendar and their checkbook. If I apply this to myself, I find myself spending my time and my money on:

-Books
-Reading
-My Dogs (more than a diversion, but getting significant time right now)
-Computers and the Web and this Blog
-Technology

I am going to end this here, but I think I need to come back to this after I've thought about it a while.
