iTunes Goofing Off

meaning_songs

I was helping a friend work on a compilation CD for her staff. Each member of the team chose a song that "meant" something to them. She works on a PC, and was not sure how to do it easily. She asked for my help, and of course, Macintosh and iTunes came to the rescue. It is so easy to do.

The experience made me think, and I decided to put together my own "meaning" mix. It was hard to winnow the list down to one CD, but I did it. The songs span 34 years (1969 - 2003) and range from early pop to New Wave, to indie rock, arena rock, country, and "I Don't Know How to Classify it" stuff. The results are above. I tried not to have more than one song by any artist, even though a few of those groups (most notably Don Henley and U2).

Seems like there is a lot of broken hearted and "I'm in Love" songs... Hmmm.

"Lullabye for a Stormy Night" is one of the sweetest songs I've ever heard. I only discovered Vienna Teng about five months ago and I've already racked up a couple thousand plays of all her songs on the two albums I have; they make great choices for the night-time playlists I run at low volume.

Many of the songs on your CD would be among my favorites, but under different moods, which is how I tend to make playlists. I have lists called "Mellow" and "Pop Hell," for example, and I play those lists when the content matches my mood better.

Your one Elton John tune brought to mind a strange thing in my own music collection (1.8MB HTML version available at http://www.donnunn.com/spiel/tunes.html for kix). I've noticed Elton John is the single best-represented artist by both number of song files (198) and total file size (1.18GB). But he's also among the least played of all the artists in my collection, just 201 total plays in the several years I've had most of those songs.

I love posts like this. It's fascinating to see others' musical tastes and how they've set up their own iTunes or other music software to handle the catalog.
