I Live in the Middle of Nowhere: Indication #327

R_n_g_aredeadYes, I live in the middle of nowhere. Granted, it is a centrally located middle of nowhere (equidistant from a couple of reasonable sized towns: Toledo and Ann Arbor are both about an hour away). Today's understanding of this comes via the lack of anyplace to pick up a new-release DVD that was not a big screen blockbuster.

I saw "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead" on a copied VHS tape back when I was still in grad school. My then-fiance-now-ex-wife had the copy and really loved the movie. I must admit that I got a kick out of it as well, and have looked for it on DVD a couple of times after conversations with friends reminded me of parts of it.

Well, imagine my surprise when reading the Detroit Free Press today and seeing in the entertainment section that it is now available. Having some time before classes started, I checked out the usual places to see if I could pick up a copy, all the while thinking that it was going to be futile. Indeed, I was right.

Thank goodness for amazon.com. I ordered it, along with a copy of the play. Get your copy here: "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead". Tim Roth and Gary Oldman both give great performances here, and Richard Dreyfus absolutely chews up the scenery.

And remember what Rosencrantz (or was it Guildenstern?) said: "All your life you live so close to truth it becomes a permanent blur in the corner of your eye. And when something nudges it into outline, it's like being ambushed by a grotesque."

Glad that R&G are Dead made that much of an impression on you. It's still one of my favorites! I recently recorded it (again) off of Showtime or Sundance, or something like that. Eventually I'll own a real DVD, for now, I'll stick with TiVo and VHS. Ah well.... Who are you? Who? ....We were sent for...And we came.

R&G Are Dead is my favorite movie. When it originally came out on DVD it was an Australian release only, region 4. Had to have a multi-region DVD player to play it. Definitely gotta get it on DVD to replace my VHS copy.
