Geek Toy Coming!

Lego_7471

Every now and then I scour eBay for a sign of the Lego(tm) Mars Explorer pictured above.  When I happen to find them, they are often only used, or outrageously priced, or coming from either sellers outside the US (causing a large price), etc.

I finally found one this morning for a price I could deal with, new in the box, and from a seller with a good feedback rating.  So, on a whim, I bought it.

858 pieces.  Multiple moving gears.  Push-button deployment of the solar panels.

Ahhh, sweet nerd-vana.

All of which reminds me that I need to get my Lego Millenium Falcon out of a box, and take it in to my office, where all of my truly geeky stuff gets displayed.

Poker Tonight...

Sheep

The house is cleaned up and ready to go. I am on my way out the door to lay in some snackage for a little poker tonight at casa del random thinks.

If all goes well, the photos above will be the "Before" and "After" shots of my guests, and not me.

Poker players have a couple of sayings about sheep: "You can shear a sheep many times, but you can only kill it once" and "If you don't know in the first 15 minutes at the poker table who the sheep is, it's you." Hopefully neither of these will apply to me tonight.

Wish me luck.

Poker Tonight: Need Good Luck

images/slashdot_patrick

I am off to another poker game tonight. I got a package in the mail today from Think Geek that included just what I might need to bring me good luck. A hat with a message only a true nerd will understand. That, and of course Patrick is coming with. After his ordeal today, I promised him he could come with me. I also want to keep him away from those two lab mice. I think they are up to no good, and I don't want Patrick warped before I have to send him back. (read the "ordeal today" link if you don't know the backstory.)

Surburban Alphabet - A Random Thinks Game!

images/suburban_alpha

I was out today for a drive (went to Toledo for music that iTunes didn't have) and snapped a few pics (see photoblog). Whilst I was doing that, I was trying to think of something fun to do blogwise. I cannot remember where it was, or who posted about it, but someone had a game where you had to identify movies by cut-outs from their posters. You only got one letter from each title and had to figure out the movie.

I decided, since I was passing through utter suburbia, that I would do something similar, but with logos from the stores in a typical suburban environment. The result is what you see in the image above.

Can you figure them out? Please don't post the answers as comments (email them to me) so you don't spoil the game for others. Please do leave a comment and let me know how many you got, which ones you might be stuck on, etc. The first to get all of them right and email them to me gets a prize. If nobody gets them all right, I'll post the answers later on this week.

Lego Doc?

images/lego_doc I've posted about Lego's (Dream Job - Lego Expert) before, and also about finding interesting games and fun stuff online (South Park Character Creator, Mr. Picassohead). This is another one of the coolest things out there: create yourself as a Lego creature.

Check it out. It is really easy to use, and all you have to do is get a screen cap to save it (instructions for screen grabs are even on the site).

Lego's were about my absolute favorite toy growing up, and I extended that part of my childhood by indulging my nephew with all the Lego's he wanted. While my nephew is now 17 and is too cool for them, I am pretty sure I have not gotten over it. I still can't see a picture of the Lego Millenium Falcon without feeling a pang of desire. *Sigh*

Poppity Pop Pop...

Need a little stress-reliever? Check out this site. I am not necessarily stressed, but I am currently winging my way through "Manic Mode" over there.

Getting Your Dream Job: Priceless

images/klein-model_f
(Click Photo to Enlarge)

As someone who loves his job probably a little too much, I had to post about this.

It seems that LegoLand California has spent about a year looking for a new Master Model Builder. This person is one of those who designs, builds and maintains the huge models at the theme parks. I read an article at Slashdot a while back chronicling the search, with a link to a blogger who made it to the interview stage.

Well, Wired reports that they finally invited 27 finalists out to California to vie (sp?) for not one, but three positions. Read the report here: Wired News: Building a New Career is a Snap. There are more pics there.

It is always great to see someone get the "Dream Job". Playing with Legos all day and getting paid. Not MY dream job, but I can see the appeal. Congrats people.

Poker Tournament Disaster

I did not post yesterday as I headed out of town early to Detroit for a poker tournament. I play in two regular games, one with friends and family in the Detroit area where I used to live and one here in Adrian. The Detroit gang gets a wild hair about twice a year and has a tournament style evening: a winner take all game with a single buy in.

Including the snowy mess I drove in and through to get there, it was a disaster. I was the first person eliminated. I simply could not get any cards worth betting, and when I did, someone else got better ones. I was dealt nothing better than three 8's all night. I think I won two or three hands, and split a couple of others before I was pushed out.

At least I got an early start to drive the 100 miles back home. I'll have to call in to find out who won.
